Helicopters to Apply Biological Larvicide to Winchester Wetland Areas

The material that is being used is a natural bacterium found in soil, according to a Town announcement.

WINCHESTER, MA—The East Middlesex Mosquito Control Project will be applying biological larvicide to control mosquito larvae over areas in Winchester next week.

The larvicide, Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis), is considered a target selective and environmentally compatible pesticide that affects mosquito larvae and a few closely related aquatic insects in the fly family, according to a Town announcement. The announcement also indicates that residents do not need to take any special precautions during the applications.

Wetlands currently being evaluated for this treatment are located near Coolidge Rd., Fairlane Terrace, The Ledges and Old Lyme Rd., according to the announcement. The applications are set to begin between April 19-26.
