Pipe Work Could Create Brown Water in Winchester

The MWRA are reactivating a pipe in Arlington and it could create brown water in some parts of Winchester.

On Thursday some Winchester residents may see a slight discoloration in their water. The Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA) will be reactivating a section of water pipeline in Arlington on Thursday, August 26.

According to Stephen Swymer, the Water and Sewer Operations Manager in the town, this should only impact the areas in Winchester west of Cambridge Street. Swymer said that it's very unlikely for the water to change color, and that the state just likes to make people aware of a possible discoloration. In most instances the water never changes color.

However, if the discoloration does occur it could last up to 48 hours.

Although safe for drinking, cooking and other uses, the discolored water, which would result from a small amount of iron in the pipes, would stain light-colored laundry items. Residents should check their water clarity Thursday before washing any white or light-colored items, according to the town.

Residents are asked to call MWRA at (617) 305-5950 if they have any questions.
