Stephen Ternullo Condemns Michael Day’s Vote Against Voter ID

Stephen Ternullo, candidate for State Representative for Stoneham and Winchester, issued a forceful statement criticizing State Representative Michael Day for voting against Amendment #1587 — a proposal that would have required voter identification in Massachusetts while guaranteeing free IDs for any voter who needed one.

Ternullo emphasized that voter ID is not a fringe issue or a partisan talking point. It is broadly supported across demographics and political affiliations, and polling consistently shows overwhelming public approval.

“Residents of Stoneham and Winchester deserve better ,” Ternullo said. “This amendment was simple, fair, and common sense — safeguard the election process while ensuring every eligible voter could obtain a free ID. There is no reasonable argument against that.”

Amendment #1587, filed by Rep. Marc Lombardo, was rejected on a near party‑line vote — a decision Ternullo says highlights a deeper problem on Beacon Hill.

“This is exactly why Beacon Hill needs balance,” he continued. “Ensuring confidence in the election process should be a shared priority. Rejecting a proposal that paired voter ID with free access for anyone who needed it is out of step with what many in our communities believe is reasonable and fair.”

Ternullo argued that Rep. Day’s vote ignored the clear will of the public and dismissed a straightforward opportunity to strengthen confidence in the electoral process.

“Stoneham and Winchester deserve a representative who listens — someone who will vote the will of the people, not the will of party leadership,” Ternullo said. “Voter ID with free IDs is a no‑brainer. The fact that it was rejected tells you everything you need to know about how disconnected Beacon Hill has become.”
