Celebrate World Spay Day

It’s 10:00am on a Tuesday when the email comes through.  A concerned neighbor spotted a cat in her yard weeks ago and it has just shown up with a litter of kittens.  Spring is not quite here yet and she’s worried about the kittens surviving the cold nights ahead.  With two cats of her own to care for she just doesn’t have the capacity to take on more, and she’s reaching out to WFCC hoping to get some help.  Many rescue organizations will receive calls just like this over the coming months…kitten season is about to begin.

Pet owners can help cut down on the number of kittens born this year by having their own pets spayed or neutered.  Unaltered male cats that are allowed outside will mate with any female cats they encounter that are in heat.  Even cats that are indoor-only occasionally escape, and if they haven’t been spayed or neutered an unplanned litter of kittens is inevitable.  What many do not realize is that cats breed all year long.  We recognize the start of spring as kitten season because outdoor cats become much more visible as the weather gets warmer and more litters of kittens survive.

Before kitten season officially begins, please take the time to get your own pets spayed or neutered.

The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society’s (MRFRS) Catmobile is a mobile spay/neuter clinic that was designed specifically for cats. The mobile clinic travels from town to town providing lower cost services: cats can be spayed or neutered, given a flea treatment, nail trim and rabies vaccination, all for $100 or less.  Microchipping is also available for an additional fee. While we all love kittens, the sad reality is that there are not enough loving homes out there for all of them.  Some kittens are social and can be adopted easily, while others need some time to warm up to people.  Even if all of the kittens born this year are adopted, rescue groups and shelters are still left with countless adult cats that have been overlooked, some of which were last year’s kittens.

Celebrate World Spay Day by making an appointment with the Catmobile.  Avoid that unwanted litter.
