Demers is candidate for School Committee

The Committee to Elect Joe Demers proudly announces that Joseph Demers is a candidate for School Committee.

Joe is a proud, lifelong resident of Woburn and a graduate of Woburn Public Schools. He attended Providence College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Secondary Education. In January of 2009, he began working as the Legislative Aide to State Representative James J. Dwyer.

Joe has served as a Legislative Aide at the State House for the past five years. During that time, he has worked on a wide range of issues and has assisted constituents in navigating our state government. He has also helped draft legislation in the area of education regarding ending unfunded mandates that burden local school budgets and establishing a commission to study school safety and security. During his time at the State House, Joe has gained the experience and knowledge that is necessary to be an effective member of the School Committee.

Many people have asked Joe his reasons for running for School Committee. His response has been simple; “I am focused on how we can help our students succeed and how we can make our school system better for the future.”

Joe is running for School Committee to make sure that our residents have an active voice that is focused on our future. He is determined to find better ways in which we operate our school system and is committed to raising the standard of our school system to ensure opportunity for all of Woburn’s students.

If elected to the School Committee, Joe wants to move our educational system forward by:

  • Creating transparency in the School Department budget so that the taxpayers can see where their tax dollars are being spent;
  • Researching grant opportunities so our children have access to the newest technologies;
  • Establishing a “rainy day” fund for special education costs to ensure that we meet our obligations to students with special needs;
  • Entering purchasing agreements with surrounding communities to save on the costs of generic school items such as school supplies, desks, building materials and food;
  • Enhancing the safety and security of our schools so that our children have a safe and comfortable environment to learn;
  • Committing to a long-term capital plan that ensures equal access to new schools and protects our previous investments by maintaining our current schools;
  • Developing a fair and equitable procedure for any school redistricting proposal to prevent interruptions in the education and growth of our students; and
  • Improving working relationships and communication with the City Council in order to meet our obligations to the children and taxpayers of Woburn.

Over the course of the next few months, Joe will make every effort to meet as many residents as possible to let you know what type of person he is, what his goals for our school system are and how he believes we can do better in Woburn. Joe will work hard to earn your vote so that he can work on your behalf as a member of the Woburn School Committee. Please remember Joe Demers for School Committee at the polls during the election this fall.

The Committee to Elect Joe Demers cordially invites you to a “Campaign Kickoff” event in support of Joe Demers on Thursday June 27th from 7:00-11:00pm at the American Legion Post 101, 194 Lexington Street. All are invited. We look forward to seeing you there!
