Start Recruiting!

Tips for recruiting new PTO members in September.

The first day of school is just about here and it's time to think about recruiting.   Yes, recruiting!

The PTO is a business and when businesses need new employees they come up with a plan and actively recruit them.  So what's your plan?

Here are some tips to actively recruit new PTO members...

1. Call each parent new to the school and personally invite them to the first PTO meeting. Be prepared to answer questions about volunteer opportunities and let them know exactly what the money raised is put toward.

2. Lots of parents congregate by the main school entrance and wait to pick-up their children. This is also the perfect place for you so set up a PTO table manned by an active PTO member. For one week, have available volunteer sign-up sheets. Take suggestions on what parents would like the PTO to accomplish this year. Actually approach parents, introduce yourself, and ask them to complete a verbal survey. At the end of the conversation, personally invite them to the first PTO meeting.

3. At least 2 weeks prior to the first PTO meeting, publish your first PTO newsletter of the school year. This printed newsletter should include oodles of information;  such as the names and contact information of the PTO Executive Board, PTO meeting dates, times and location, PTO website address, volunteer opportunities, descriptions of annual PTO programs and events, descriptions of PTO savings programs, and a list of informative websites, such as PTO Ideas, PTO Today, or StepbyStep Fundraising, where parents can research new ideas.

4. And finally, represent your PTO as a friendly, welcoming group.  Approach each and every person with kind words and a smile, because people will always remember how you made them feel.
