WMHS Class of 2013 Enjoy Senior Activities

As the school year comes to an end, there are many different emotions.

As the school year comes to an end, there are many different emotions. The freshman are glad to no longer be the youngest kids in the school, while the sophomores are happy to be juniors and the juniors to be seniors. However the emotion about moving on for the seniors is entirely different. The seniors will no longer be moving on to another grade at Woburn High but to a completely different school. Many kids will be moving out of their comfort zone by going to colleges outside of Massachusetts, whereas others may not but still have to deal with the emotions of leaving their beloved home.

It`s an emotional experience and senior Mark Melo comments on how he feels about leaving.

“I am excited to have the chance to meet new people in college but at the same time I don’t want to leave my friends and teachers,” said Melo

Although leaving is a very sad moment, the seniors have lots of fun activities that can help get their mind off the agonizing thought of leaving their home and friends. One of these events was the yearbook ceremony, held Wednesday, May 22.

All the seniors got dressed up in their best attire to celebrate this wonderful moment. Signing friends’ yearbooks for the last time is a very special moment, but the most special memory of this day was who the year book was dedicated to,  beloved staff member, Mrs. Gayle Murphy, who will be retiring this year. All of the staff and students were touched that their yearbook was dedicated to such a honored teacher at Woburn High.

English teacher Mrs. Gillis expresses her feeling on this wonderful moment.

“I was thrilled Mrs. Murphy received the dedication this year. As a former student of hers, I can attest to how much she has done the students of WMHS in the decades she has worked here, not just to help them improve their English skills, but also to help them become thoughtful citizens of the world they are entering,” said Gillis.

Murphy leaving added to the high emotions felt by all the seniors. But the seniors couldn`t be sad just yet, because they still had many fun activities to do. One of the most recent activities was the senior prom which was held Thursday May 23th, at the Danversport Yacht Club. The girls appeared in their stunning gowns and the boys got to show off their classy side with their lovely tuxes. These stunning students got to show off their gowns and tuxes at Woburn High`s second annual Promenade. Here couples got to walk down a red carpet and show themselves off.

Senior Michaela Quigley tells about her wonderful experience at the Promenade and feels that she would definitely do it again.

“Being in the promenade was so much fun. I loved being able to walk down the red carpet and show off my dress. I felt like a movie star while posing and having my picture taken. It was also a great way to see other people’s dresses too,” said Quigley.

The Promenade was a clear hit and so was the prom. All the seniors got to enjoy the lovely view at the Yacht Club, many even took pictures outside. There was also a photo booth so couples and friends could take memorable pictures. After a great meal, the seniors got to dance the night away. This would be one of the last times the class of 2013 would ever all be together. It was a great last memory and senior Rachel Wells agrees.

“I enjoyed prom a lot because it was one of the last nights I am going to see some of my friends that I usually don’t see outside of school,” said Wells.

The class of 2013 will meet one last time at their graduation Sunday, June 2. Finally the well-deserved diplomas will be given to these hard working students. The last time these seniors will ever be on their Woburn turf field will be for the greatest reason of all, graduating to bigger and better things. As emotional as graduating is, the best feeling of all should be that no matter where you go the city of black and orange will always be your home.
