This past Thursday, May 24, Woburn Memorial High School held the 11th annual Tanner Trot. Every year, this event is organized by the upcoming Girls Varsity Soccer team captains. Juniors Leann DiMauro, Samantha Young, and Nikkie Huynh were in charge of organizing the program this year.
There are three ways in which anyone can become involved in the Tanner Trot. One can sign up to be a sponsor for $30 or a donor for $20, and both are rewarded a t-shirt and are allowed to have their name on the back of the shirt. The third way to become involved is to be a participant for only $10. Participants get a t-shirt also, but are not allowed to have their name added on the back of the shirt. Participants have the choice to either walk or run 2.2 miles starting and ending at WMHS during second and third periods.

Every year, the Tanner Trot is very successful in joining together community, students, and even teachers. By donating money to be a sponsor, donor, or participant, half of the proceeds go towards breast cancer research while the other half raises money for WMHS’ Girls Varsity Soccer team. In past years, the Tanner Trot was extremely popular, but Junior Erin Kimmelman thinks that this year had much more response.
“I thought it [the Tanner Trot] went really well! I’m pretty sure we had more people participate this year than any other year,” said Kimmelman.

Apart from there being many more participants this year, the event itself was much more organized than in past years. DiMauro, Young, and Huynh put much of their time into organizing this event and it really showed. Huynh talks about her experience with the Tanner Trot this year.
“I think the Tanner Trot was very successful this year, and I thought it was better than past years because I felt like it was more organized because Leann, Sam, and I got everything in order,” said Huynh.
Each and every participant has a different reason as to why they get involved in this annual event. Whether your reason to donate, run, or walk be to help out the Girls Varsity Soccer team or to raise money for breast cancer research, the Tanner Trot has a great impact on each and every participant. Junior Kara Razzaboni talks about why she runs the Tanner Trot every year.
“I do the Tanner Trot because as a runner for the indoor and outdoor track teams, I think I should use my running ability to help out the soccer girls and breast cancer research,” said Razzaboni.
The Tanner Trot is a great way to get involved and help make a difference. Each year, more and more people involve themselves in this event to help raise money for the Girls Soccer team and for Breast Cancer research. The Tanner Trot is open for anyone to participate in, and all runners/walkers receive complimentary breakfast after the “trot.” The Tanner Trot is always one of the most popular events at WMHS, so if you are looking to make a difference in some way next year, sign up for the 12th annual Tanner Trot because it will be something you will not want to miss!
