Despite Opposition, Woburn School Schedule Will Stay The Same

A proposal to keep the traditional, post-Labor Day start of the school year narrowly passed Woburn City Council.

WOBURN, MA -- For the second time in as many years, the Woburn School Committee rejected a proposal to move the start of the school year to before the Labor Day holiday in the first weekend of September. The plan to keep the post-Labor Day start in place, which was backed by Superintendent Matthew Crowley, passed by a 4-3 vote.

Crowley recommended that the schedule stick in place at least for this year, given that Labor Day falls early in 2019. As a concession, Crowley recommended creating a working committee to study the proposal further. That group will deliver a recommendation on whether school should start earlier by April 1.

School committee members John Wells and Patricia Chisholm said Crowley had been instructed to prepare for a pre-Labor Day start in 2019 when the board rejected a proposal to move un the start of this school year last March. Last year the schedule change was rejected in part because of opposition from the union that represents Woburn teachers.
