East Woburn to Welcome Bulbs & Lamps Store

The new store will be inhabiting a 20,000 square-foot space on Washington Street in the Staples building.

WOBURN, MA—Washington Street will be home to a New Bulbs & Lamp store, as City Council unanimously approved its special permit request at a recent City Council meeting.

City Council voted 8-0 in favor of Bulbs & Lamps occupying a 21,971 square-foot area at 335 Washington Street. According to Joseph Tarby, the attorney representing Bulbs & Lamps, the building was formerly used by CompUSA beginning in 1992 and is a part of the Staples suite building.

Ward 6 Alderman Edward Tedesco was absent for the vote. During the meeting, traffic around the Washington Street corridor was a significant concern of the Aldermen.

"The number of vehicles coming and going on to Washington Street is a nightmare," Alderman Michael Concannon stated at the meeting."Any opportunity we get to try to reduce the number of vehicles and access points, I think we should try."

"Making a left-hand turn out of there is difficult," Ward 5 Alderman Darlene Mercer-Bruen stated at the meeting."Making a right-hand turn can be difficult depending on the time of day."

Robert Crensman, the Vice President of Operations for Bulbs and Lamps stated that the store would be 50 percent retail and 50 percent wholesale. John Paul Martingnetti, representing the building owner Martignetti Enterprises as well as Tarby, stated that the store is expected to see low-traffic volume use.

"It's a site that's been operational for the better part of 20 years," Martingnetti said at the meeting."Certainly Washington Street has its difficulties, but unfortunately I don't know how we can rectify all of the traffic on Washington Street. We are filling 20,000 square feet of square feet space with a very low-traffic use."

Bulbs and Lamps is set to be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. City Clerk William Campbell told Patch that the special permit will be issued June 9, barring any appeal.
