As Service comes to an end for SCI AmeriCorps members we are mandated to create a Legacy Binder with helpful hints and notes to ease the transition for the next AmeriCorps member coming in Fall 2014.
I am conflicted between "you live and learn" advice and concrete things like asking to use the color printer before printing off 20 pages. What does the next AmeriCorps member really need to know? I can give them inventory of the supplies we have and where to find poster board and who to ask for lesson planning advice, but will they really go searching in a binder for those question or find the answers themselves.
As I write my legacy binder I want to show off the cool things I did with the youth , but I realize I could have done a lot more to impact the community and the youth.
I should have made stronger connections with the Woburn people and organizations in the area to complete projects such as the green house we are waiting to build. I could have volunteered more hours with the youth to a variety of fundraising events.
The best advice I can give the next AmeriCorps member is names and events she/he can build upon.
Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel; my wish for the next AmeriCorps member is to be engulfed in the Woburn culture and be more available for community members. Let them dictate how they want their community strengthen and give them quality time and some input. Build relationships with the people who are invested in a youth success and healthy lifestyles. I hope to create a team of people the next AmeriCorps member can look at connect with.
If you are still reading this and would like to be part of the AmeriCorps team comment or e-mail me back!
Let us create a Legacy Binder so full of awesome names and number that the next AmeriCorps member will have it on top of the desk open and never hidden in a bottom drawer.
