ICYMI: Is Horn Pond Inhabited by Ghosts?

There are many rumors of Horn Pond being haunted. Patch investigated to see if there was any legitimacy to those rumors.

Editor's Note: This story was published earlier this week. Here it is again in case you missed it.

WOBURN, MA—Legend has it, Horn Pond is inhabited by ghosts.

However, the claims of ghosts have been wildly inconsistent. According to the Shadowlands Index of Haunted Places, two Native American ghosts have been seen traveling through old parts of Horn Pond, trying to keep people out of their land.

A blog post from Tripping on Legends states that Horn Pond was the site of an ancient battle between the gods of light and dark. The gods of light trapped the bad guys there and then drown them. The post also indicates that there have been multiple deaths in the pond through unexplained means.

Maureen Willis, the executive director of the Woburn Historical Society, told Patch that the Historical Society has no record of any accounts of Horn Pond being haunted.

While the above claims seem to have a Native American theme, accounts from people claiming to have seen apparitions at Horn Pond are significantly different.

The following excerpt was posted on the Ghosts of America website by someone referring to themselves as "Fisherman."

"The forest area by Horn Pond is a very spooky place. Many claim to have seen the apparition of a young woman in this little patch of woods. Supposedly she was the victim of a vicious murder. I didn't believe in these stories until one day I saw her for myself. I was down there doing some bird watching when I saw this young woman walking among the trees. She looked really confused in some weird way so I called out to her thinking she might be lost. At that instant she disappeared."

Here is another excerpt from an un-named poster.

"The woods on the west side of Horn Pond are extremely uncomfortable to be alone in. I used to go fishing there but no more. I was fishing along the east side of the cove and heard above me on the path the sound of pounding hooves. I was sure that if I looked up I would see a horse and rider but there was nothing. This was in broad daylight. On the shore of the main body of the pond on the west side near the island I cannot stand to be anymore. You always feel like someone is on the top of the bluff looking down at you. Never again even by day."

While it is unclear why these claims have been made, one thing seems to be certain. Horn Pond can be a spooky place to be at night.
