Obama is Rumored Virtual Speaker at AmeriCorps Event
The volunteer organization is celebrating 20 years of service in Massachusetts.

The AmeriCorps program is celebrating 20 years of strengthening communities across Massachusetts Friday afternoon.
The celebration will take place at Tufts University, and an AmeriCorps press release notes that President Barack Obama is rumored to speak at the event via video feed.
Over 200 AmeriCorps members are expected to attend, including 20 members from Eastern Massachusetts who are currently serving with Social Capital Inc.

Members of the organization work to solve social issues like illiteracy, homelessness, hunger, and violence against women.
Social Capital Inc., a nonprofit, brings AmeriCorps members to Eastern Massachusetts to help restore and revive communities in need including Boston, Dorchester, Mattapan, Woburn, Lynn, Chinatown and Fall River.

“They really are extraordinary people doing extraordinary service in all of our communities and changing the lives of those they serve,” said Emily Haber, CEO of the Massachusetts Service Alliance that manages AmeriCorps in Massachusetts.
The nearly 200 members of SCI have performed over 200,000 hours of service in the eight years of operating with AmeriCorps. Massachusetts has produced 27,000 SCI members, according to SCI’s website.
There are more than 80,000 AmeriCorps members nationwide who volunteer and offer public services to local schools and various nonprofits.
