Excerpts from the Woburn Police Department log.

Wednesday, Nov. 26

At 10:30 a.m., police arrested Matthew McGill Butz, 24, 19 Woodside Terrace, Apt. 1, Woburn, and charged him with forgery of a check, receiving a stolen vehicle and uttering a false check. Officer David Simonds was working a paid detail at TD Bank on Montvale Avenue when he saw Butz enter the bank. The Woburn man went to a teller, but the bank told him he could not complete his transaction. Butz left the bank and the officer asked the bank if there was problem. The bank reportedly told police that there was a question about a signature on the check that Butz tried to cash. Simonds went outside and walked toward Butz, who allegedly sped away in a car. The officer called in the car’s information and found that it was stolen overnight from Van Norden Road in Woburn. Police spoke to the person whose bank account is connected to the check and she said she doesn’t know Butz. That person also owned the vehicle that Butz allegedly stole. The woman said the vehicle was locked, but she leaves a spare key in the glove box and had a check in there too. Police later spotted Butz outside Target and made the arrest. When talking to police, he reportedly admitted to stealing the vehicle and check. He said he had broken into 10 to 12 cars in Woburn.
