Afternoon Standoff Ends With One Man in Custody

Afternoon incident resolved with no injuries

Police had not released information as of 7 Thursday night regarding the earlier incident on Russell Street that drew a SWAT team and intense neighborhood attention, temporarily closed down the street, and kept children at the Reeves School and the Joyce Middle school because of the police activity.

There were reports that a man had barricaded himself in a Russell Street house, and there were reports of a gunshot. Police reportedly advised neighbors to stay inside.

The incident started in the early afternoon on Russell Street in the area of the Woburn Animal Hospital, and police cleared the area once the man was in custody a couple of hours later, according to reports.

Parents received this message, “Reeves School: bus 1 and bus 3 students are being held at the Reeves because of police activity on russell st. Parents may pick up students. Joyce Middle School students on Bus 1, 2, and 3 also being held at school until Russell St police situation is resolved. Parents of Joyce students who take bus 1,2, and 3 may pick their children up at the school.”

Later in the afternoon, Woburn Public Schools tweeted,”Very proud of staff at Joyce and Reeves today. Proper procedures were used, and student safety came first. Woburn PD are great partners!”

There were no reports of injuries.

Woburn Police said there were be no new information on Thursday night.
