Burlington Will Ask Special Town Meeting To Cover Cost Overruns At Fire Station Project

The body will also considering banning retail marijuana sales when it meets at 7:30 on September 25.

One year after approving $8.5 million to build a second fire station, Burlington Town Meeting will be asked to approve an additional $225,000 for the project when it holds a Special Town Meeting on September 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Burlington High School. Burlington Special Town Meeting will also consider a proposed new by-law to ban businesses that sell recreational marijuana under new Massachusetts laws.

If passed, Article 10 on the 19-Warrant Special Town Meeting Agenda would authorize a $225,000 bond for completion of Fire Station 2 to cover unexpected costs. Proceeds from the bond would cover new sidewalks and landscaping, as well as soil improvements at the site at the corner of Terrace Hall Avenue and Middlesex Turnpike.

"I feel we are on target, but we just have to make this request to accommodate these additional needs," Town Administrator John Petrin told the Daily Times Chronicle. "We do not want to be a couple hundred-thousand dollars short. I’d rather be case so that we do not lose the potential of the complete project package when we go to bid this fall."

Special Town Meeting will also consider a by-law proposed by the Burlington Selectmen that would prohibit retail marijuana sales in the town. Many towns are moving to pass similar laws as Massachusetts prepares to legalize the sale of marijuana for recreational use after voters approved a referendum last year.
