Woburn Licensing Commission Says Restaurant Stayed Open Too Late For Mayweather-McGregor

The board will also hear a complaint that Dharani Restaurant on Main Street violated state law by advertising a happy hour promotion.

Conor McGregor wasn't the only loser after his August 31 superfight against Floyd Mayweather. The Dave & Busters at 271 Mishawum Road in Woburn is the subject of a complaint that alleges it stayed open past its 1 am closing time. As a result, managers from the restaurant will need to appear before the Woburn Licensing Commission when it holds its regularly-scheduled meeting Thursday.

The Woburn Police officer assigned to the detail at Dave & Buster's reported there were still patrons in the building watching the fight, which went past the 1 am closing time. Dave & Buster's had advertised a Fight Night promotion in conjunction with the event, which was broadcast on pay-per-view television.

At the time of the incident, according to The Daily Times Chronicle, the manager conceded Dave & Buster's violated the terms of its city-issued license and promised to reeducate staff on closing procedures. He told the police officer that some patrons were waiting for rides from Uber, while others were waiting to see the outcome of the fight.

The only other violation item on the agenda for Thursday's meeting involves Dharani Restaurant, which took over the location at 474 Main Street in Woburn that was previously occupied by Tanner Tavern. The restaurant allegedly violated state liquor license laws by advertising a June 14th Happy Hour and on August 30 for advertising as a bar without food service.

Massachusetts outlawed happy hour promotions in 1984 following the high-profile drunk driving death of 20-year-old Kathleen Barry of Weymouth. Attempts to repeal the ban have resurfaced periodically, most recently when the state drafted casino gambling laws in 2011, but have thus far been unsuccessful.
