Woburn School Budget Avoids Deep Program Cuts
Mayor Scott Galvin and City Council approved an extra $1 million to help the school system close a shortfall.

WOBURN, MA ā Mayor Scott Galvin and Woburn City Council delivered $1 million and a stern lecture to the Woburn School Department to help close a $2 million budget shortfall. The deficit had threatened to force the school district to make program cuts for next year. The School Committee did not learn about the shortfall for the current fiscal year until after it signed a new contract with the union representing Woburn teachers last month.
"The members of the city council arenāt happy about where we find ourselves, but since Iāve become mayor weāve had a real commitment around our schools," Mayor Scott Galvin told North Suburban News, which first reported this story. "Weāre here to solve the problem and move the schools forward." The deficit was caused by higher-than-expected special education costs, Superintendent Matthew Crowley said.
