Woburn School Committee Elects New Chair For 2018

Joe Demers replaces Ellen Crowley as the committee continues its search for a new superintendent.

WOBURN, MA -- Elected officials were sworn in as part of innauguration ceremonies in Woburn Monday evening, and the school committee wasted no time in electing Joseph Demers to serve as its chair for 2018. Demers replaces Ellen Crowley, who remains on the committee but is stepping down as chair after serving in that post for 2017.

Demers was first elected to the school committee in 2013. He is a lifelong Woburn resident and currently works as a legislative aide to state Rep. James Dwyer (D-Woburn).

The top issue facing the school committee is hiring a new superintendent to replace Mark Donovan, who plans to retire at the end of the school year. Last month the committee said it was extending the process to choose a superintendent, with interviews expected to take place at a meeting in January.
