Greendale Mall Demolition Plan Will Get Public Hearing This Week

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester residents this week will get a chance to give their opinion about plans to demolish the Greendale Mall and replace it with a warehouse and distribution center.

The mall's owner, Finard Properties, has asked for permission to tear down the 33-year-old mall to build a 121,000 square-foot warehouse facility, according to city documents. The facility would be built for Amazon, according to the Worcester Business Journal.

The Neponset Street mall is all but vacant, down to just the anchor TJ Maxx-HomeGoods store.

If approved, the Worcester Amazon warehouse would be part of a larger expansion for the company in the region. Amazon is planning to open two new sorting facilities in Northborough in the coming months. Amazon is also adding a new sorting facility in Milford, where it already operates a large distribution center.

Amazon is also building a robotics research facility in Westborough, taking over the iconic office park once used by AstraZeneca featuring pyramid-shaped buildings.

The Worcester Planning Board will take public input on the proposal beginning at the Dec. 9 meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually.
