Longtime 'Guitar Repair Guy' From Union Music Opening Up Own Shop

Dave Dick has been at Union Music for 24 years. The professional musician is now putting his pennies and talents into his own place.

WORCESTER, MA—Clearly, Dave Dick does not have a fear of commitment. He's played in the same band for 18 years, and worked at the same job for 24 years.

If you play a stringed instrument and you live or play in the Worcester area, chances are you've had Dick fix or "set up" your guitar, banjo, mandolin or bass.

For 24 years, Dick has done this at Union Music as its primary guitar repairman, but soon, he'll be moving west. An "opportunity came up," and Dick is opening a repair shop and parts supply store called D String on Route 20 in Sturbridge.

"It's the right time in my evolution professionally to start my own business," said Dick, who has played banjo and guitar in the Blackstone Valley Bluegrass Band for 18 years. "I plan to expand services and parts inventory which wasn't in the future for Union."

D String won't sell equipment and instruments, but Dick says he has plans for expansion of the repair facilities and parts aspect of the store. He'll continue to do most repairs by appointment.

"I'm leaving Union Music on very good terms," wrote Dick on his Facebook page. The staff, and owner Carl Kamp, have been so great to me for all these years. I very much encourage you to continue to do business with Union Music, which remains the best music store in Central Massachusetts."
