Sweet Sanders Cake 'Berns' Up the Internet

Massachusetts baker Nicole Messier made a cake for her son, a Bernie Sanders supporter. Now that cake has been shared with thousands.

WORCESTER, MA — Nicole Messier has made all sorts of cakes - weddings, anniversaries, birthdays. But it was a cake she made for her son’s 18th birthday that’s brought in the most attention to her sweet creations.

But it was a cake she made for her son’s 18th birthday that has everyone talking - and sharing thousands of Bernie Sanders slices.

Messier’s son Indiana, a senior at Doherty Memorial High School, will be voting in his first election this year, and supports Sanders.

“When I asked him several weeks back what kind of cake he wanted, he jokingly said ‘Bernie Sanders,’” said Messier. “I tucked the information away and as the day got closer, I started thinking about how I could pull it off. To be honest, my politics differ a bit from my son’s, but what was important was that he was happy.”

Messier shared a picture of the cake on her business’s Facebook page, and she quickly got hundreds of likes, and more than 50 shares. But once her son was shared on a Sanders supporters page, that shot to more than 7,000 likes and many more shares.

“Within 20 minutes, it had 2,500 likes, and last night it surpassed 7,000,” said Messier. ”The post on the Butter Box Facebook page has around 500 likes and I’ve received more than 100 requests from people all over the country to see if I can make and ship them one.”

Messier has a full-time career as a business manager for Raytheon, but started baking as a hobby several years ago.

“More and more people started requesting cakes,” she said. “Now, it’s one thing to be able to bake a delicious cake and quite another to be able to decorate and design like a professional, so I took some decorating classes, watched a lot of YouTube videos and started selling them to friends. About a year ago, I decided to test the waters and lo and behold there was a small market.”

Sounds like that market has gotten quite a bit bigger.
