New Worcester High School To Be Celebrated This Week

The new Doherty High School opened to students this year. A ribbon-cutting and tour of the school are scheduled for this week.

WORCESTER, MA -- The new Doherty High School is opening in Worcester and will be celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, fundraiser, and community tour.

The 425,000-square-foot facility on Highland Street opened for students this year. The school will serve about 1,670 students in grades 9 to 12.

The school features four academic wings, a large health and physical education space that includes a gymnasium, weight room, wellness room, and adaptive spaces for students with disabilities; auditorium; black box theater; music rooms; and spaces for technical education programs.

An athletic field is currently under construction at the site of the old building, adjacent to the new school.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony and plaque unveiling will be held Thursday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. The event will feature numerous elected officials along with administrators from the Worcester Public Schools and City of Worcester, according to a statement.

The public is invited for a self-guided tour of the new building Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Numerous students, staff, and volunteers will be on hand to help with directions and answer questions.

During the tour, numerous items from the old Doherty building will be for sale to benefit the school.

The public may purchase commemorative bricks, signs, scoreboards, lockers, and auditorium chairs. A website will be established for the remaining items with prices following the tour.
