WORCESTER, MA — After vaccines brought high hopes for an end to pandemic-era precautions, the coronavirus delta variant has forced their return.

On Monday, a new mask mandate went into effect in Worcester. That's because of an alarming number of new coronavirus cases that are pushing local hospitals to capacity. Worcester alone added more 500 new cases over the week ending Sept. 17 — the tenth consecutive week of case increases, according to local health data.

Gov. Charlie Baker ended the statewide mask mandate in May, but cities and towns across the state have been bringing them back due to the delta variant. Earlier this summer, Worcester began a mask mandate in municipal buildings. That's still in effect for everyone over age 5.

The new Worcester mask mandate applies to "all indoor private common space" in the city. According to city officials, that means places like supermarkets, offices and restaurants. The order does not apply, for example, while eating or drinking in a restaurant. The mandate also would not apply if, for example, there's only one person working in an office space. You would also be able to take a mask off while getting a haircut.

Worcester Medical Director Dr. Michael Hirsh brought masks back under an emergency order. However, the order will still go before the Board of Health at the Sept. 27 meeting. Residents can attend the meeting to give feedback about it.
