New Supermarket-Sized RMV Promises 'Customer-Centered Environment'

WORCESTER, MA — A supermarket-sized RMV customer service center will open its doors Monday, offering a large — and hopefully fast — place to do motor vehicle business.

The new RMV at 50 Southwest Cutoff is opening in a former Big Y supermarket, and replaces the more cramped service center at Myrtle and Main streets in downtown Worcester. That location shut for good on Friday.

The new service center boasts 21 service stations, 350 parking spots and an on-site motorcycle testing course. The building has also received an HVAC upgrade with HEPA filters, according to MassDOT.

"Over the past several years, the RMV has made strides in building an industry leading, customer-centered environment for individual and commercial customers, as well as for business and government partners," MassDOT said in a news release.

The new Worcester center — along with RMVs service centers in Milford and Leominster — is the main in-person center west of I-95, except for AAA members.

But that gap between Worcester and I-95 may not be around for long. The state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance — an agency that deals with maintaining state properties — in mid-June posted a legal notice seeking bids for a new RMV office somewhere in a wide area between Marlborough and Milford.

The new service center will be open weekdays starting Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is close to Mass Pike Exit 96 and just off of Route 20. The Worcester Regional Transit Authority Route 12 bus services the shopping plaza.
