Pot Shops Bring In $2.2 Million In First Week; MA Nets $337K

That's a lot of green.

Recreational marijuana sales in Massachusetts last week surpassed $2.2 million, according to data released Tuesday afternoon. The state was the recipient of some $377,000.

There were 56,380 total units - or items - purchased between Nov. 20-25. That broke down to 3.4 units per transaction. The average amount of money spent per unit purchased was $39.33. The most profitable day was the day after Thanksgiving, when gross sales hit $439,748.58.

That's a fair chunk of change for the communities hosting the pot shops, which have the option of instituting a 3 percent tax. Leicester and Northampton will split more than $66,000.

There is also a 10.75 percent excise tax on top of the state's 6.25 percent sales tax.

The first two recreational pot shops in the East Coast - Cultivate in Leicester and New England Treatment Access in Northampton - opened last Tuesday.
