Potentially Dangerous Algae Scum Seen In Lake Quinsigamond
A southern portion of Lake Quinsigamond near Route 20 may contain algae that's harmful to people and pets.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester officials are warning locals to stay away from a southern portion of Lake Quinsigamond due to a potentially dangerous algae scum.
The city's Department of Inspectional Services reported the scum in Half Moon Cove Wednesday. That area is located between Route 20 and Bay View Drive in the Edgemere area.
"All persons should avoid contact with scums and keep pets out of the water where scums are present. Cyanobacteria are naturally occurring, but can be harmful in high densities," the city said in a news release.

Although the algae detected in the lake has the potential to produce toxins, not all scums do. Still, officials advise pet owners to contact a veterinarian if a pet comes in contact with the scum.
