Rocking Toward the Declaration of Independence

Three bands rock it out to send South High kids to experience history. Plus, percussionists from South are playing on buckets.

WORCESTER, MA -- It’s been nearly 240 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed. And a group of student musicians from South High is hoping to attend the celebration. Light your bottle rockets.

Local singer Christine Greenwalt is coordinating a show to raise funds for the South High Community Band to travel to represent Massachusetts at the 240th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Dirty Cherry, Far From Eden and Girls on Girls each rock sets for the event, which happens on Sunday, Feb. 21, from 2-6 p.m. at Jillian’s on Grove Street. The percussion section of the South High Band is also performing a bucket piece during the event.

“My daughter has become a more confident person and has learned the value of working in a team,” said Greenwalt. “These kids deserve an opportunity to share their music and civic pride. For some of them it may be a once in a lifetime opportunity and money shouldn’t be an obstacle. She is a percussionist and a junior and has been influenced in her daily life by music and the organization as a whole.”

The benefit, which also includes raffles, is open to all ages, and a $10 donation is suggested. Jillian’s donated the venue.
