UMass Gets 'C' Ratings in Hospital Study
The Worcester hospital - both campuses - earned a C grade in this seasonal study.

WORCESTER, MA - The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit founded by employers and health-care providers, announced its Fall 2016 hospital safety rankings Monday, a measure of how safe a hospital is for patients.
At the local level, UMass Memorial Medical Center-University Campus received a C grade, a grade the hospital has consistently maintained in this study. The hospital scored a C in the Spring 2016 ratings, a C in the fall 2015 ratings, and a C in spring 2015. Prior to 2015, the hospital received a C in the fall of 2014, A in the spring of 2014, and a C in the fall of 2013.
UMass Memorial Medical Center-Memorial Campus also received a C grade. The hospital scored a C in the Spring 2016 ratings, a B in the fall 2015 ratings, and a C in spring 2015. Prior to 2015, the hospital received a C in the fall of 2014, C in the spring of 2014, and C's in 2013.

The safety grade is based on factors, such as how often patients at a given hospital acquire infections or other conditions during their stay, or how well-staffed a hospital's intensive care unit may be.
According to the Leapfrog ranking, Massachusetts' safest hospitals (those receiving "straight A's" over the past three years) are: Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis; Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge; Saint Anne's Hospital, Fall River; Beverly Hospital, Beverly; Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield; Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, Brockton; Holy Family Hospital, Methuen; Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Newton; Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, Boston; and Addison Gilbert Hospital, Gloucester.
