WORCESTER, MA — Voters in Worcester have made several key choices in the 2022 midterm election, electing two well-known local Democrats to statewide office and opting to adopt a new tax surcharge to fund community projects.

Here's what happened in the biggest races in Worcester in 2022:

  • Worcester voters adopted the Community Preservation Act, which means a 1.5 percent surcharge on property tax bills to fund items like buying open space, creating affordable housing and historic preservation. The CPA was targeted by the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce with a TV ad, but the "yes" side raised close to $50,000 to pass the measure.
  • Incumbent state Rep. David LeBoeuf won a third term in a race against Republican and Worcester firefighter Paul Fullen. LeBoeuf carried the Worcester portion of the 17th Worcester state House district by a huge margin, but Fullen came out ahead in the Leicester portion of the district. "Thank you to everyone in the 17th Worcester for your support and overwhelmingly re-electing me as your state representative. The work continues tomorrow," LeBoeuf tweeted just before 10 p.m. Tuesday.
  • In the marquee local race of 2022, Democratic nominee Robyn Kennedy won the state Senate seating Harriette Chandler is leaving at the end of the year. Kennedy defeated Worcester Mayor Joe Petty in the September primary, and faced a challenge from Berlin resident Lisa Mair on Tuesday.
