Worcester Bridge To Be Renamed In Honor Of NBA Legend Bob Cousy

Cousy had a star-studded career with the Boston Celtics from 1957 to 1963.

WORCESTER, MA — Gov. Maura Healey announced that she is working with the City of Worcester to rename the I-290 bridge over Southbridge Street after an NBA legend.

The bridge will be renamed the "Bob Cousy Pass," the governor announced last week. Cousy, who now lives in Worcester and had a star-studded career with the Boston Celtics from 1957 to 1963, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.

This announcement comes just a month after the College of the Holy Cross said it would name a basketball court in honor of Cousy, a former player at the school.

The college said it would name its Hart Center Arena at the Luth Athletic Complex in honor of Cousy, who graduated in 1950 and led the team to NCAA championships. The court will be permanently known as "Bob Cousy '50 Court."

Gov. Healey said that Cousy is her all-time favorite player, and she wore No. 14 throughout her own basketball career in his honor. The two were close friends for many years, according to a news release.

This is not the first time Gov. Healey worked to name a bridge after a former Celtics player. She and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu renamed the North Washington Street Bridge in Boston the "William Felton ‘Bill’ Russell Bridge" in honor of the civil rights activist and NBA legend. Russell passed away in 2022 at the age of 88.

“Last year, we unveiled the brand-new Bill Russell Bridge in Boston,” said Gov. Healey. “This year, we’ll honor another Celtics legend when we dedicate the new Bob Cousy Pass in his hometown of Worcester. Cooz, I know you’re watching at home. I can’t wait to see you and take a ride together.”
