Worcester Could Get $6M For Grocery Access, DCU Center
Worcester could receive more than $6 million for upgrades to the DCU Center and for fresh food access.
WORCESTER, MA — Worcester could receive more than $6 million for DCU Center upgrades and fresh food access through earmarks added to a state economic development bill.
State Sen. Michael Moore (D-Millbury) said the Senate adopted two Worcester earmarks during debate on the bill: $5 million in bond funding for building improvements and modernization projects at the DCU Center and $1.083 million for expanded access to fresh groceries through the Massachusetts Food Trust Program.
The Senate passed the broader economic development bill last week and sent it back to the House for further consideration. The bill includes $575.4 million in authorizations for economic development, housing, research, artificial intelligence and other programs, according to the Massachusetts Senate.
The DCU Center is owned by the city of Worcester and managed by Legends Global. The downtown venue includes a 14,000-seat arena and attached convention center.
Most recently, the City of Worcester and entertainment company ASM Global completed an overhaul of the DCU Center’s arena sound system. The arena and convention center underwent a $2.2 million sound system overhaul to meet the audio demands of today’s performances last year.
The Massachusetts Food Trust Program provides loans, grants, and business assistance for projects that increase access to healthy, affordable food in low- and moderate-income communities with limited grocery access.
