Worcester Named Among 'Safest For Kids' List: Study

Worcester ranked in the top 20 of a recent study on the safest metropolitan areas in the country.

WORCESTER, MA — In turns out, Worcester again has topped a list of great places to live. This time, it's because it's a safe place for kids.

Worcester landed at number 16 in a list of 200 released by Personal finance website ValuePenguin.com, one of three Massachusetts places that made the list. Barnstable topped the list at number one, and Boston-Cambridge-Newton ranked at number 24.

Here's a breakdown of how Worcester ranked amongst the factor categories we considered (1 = Best, 100 = Average):

  • Overall: 16
  • Schools: 12
  • Safety: 79
  • Community: 34

ValuePenguin used 18 data points for the 200 U.S. metropolitan, included a half-dozen or pure safety stats, from rates of several classes of crime to the number cops per capita.

"But we gave equal weight to two other dimensions of security and nurturing: how well schools are functioning, including enrollment and graduation rates, and how completely the overall urban environment supports kids, including keeping them free from poverty and able to access services from day care to health care to libraries and museums," said the release.
