Worcester Playground To Close For Renovations
Portions of the play area will close as the city begins a renovation project expected to continue into next summer.
WORCESTER, MA — Portions of South Worcester Playground will close in September as the city begins a renovation project expected to continue into next summer.
The handball and basketball courts at the 380 Cambridge St. park will close Sept. 1, according to the Worcester Parks, Recreation & Cemetery Department. The adjacent Babe Ruth baseball field will also be unavailable for safety reasons until the work is completed in summer 2027.
The separate children’s playground will close Sept. 21. The department said that work is expected to be completed by Oct. 21.
The project calls for new basketball and handball courts with sports lighting, new site lighting, fencing, pavement and other site improvements, according to a city bid posting. The city estimated the project’s cost at $1.34 million.
Plans for the children’s area include replacing the rubber safety surface and existing playground equipment, according to the bid documents.
South Worcester Playground, also known as Harry Sherry Field and Maloney Field, is a 4.9-acre park that also includes two baseball fields, a soccer area, a community garden and the South Worcester Neighborhood Center.
