Worcester Ranks Among Top 10 Cities With Best Budgeters In U.S., New Study Suggests

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester has some of the best budgeters of anywhere in the U.S., a new study suggests.

Worcester ranked ninth overall for having the best budgeters in the nation, according to a WalletHub report released Wednesday. The personal finance company ranked cities for 2026's Cities With the Best and Worst Budgeters, highlighting places where residents are managing their finances effectively.

The report compared more than 180 U.S cities based on 12 metrics, like credit scores, debt-to-income ratios and foreclosure rates.

Residents of Worcester ranked in the top 50 in the U.S. for five categories: non-mortgage debt as a percentage of income, foreclosure rate, credit utilization percentage, housing expenses as a percentage of median home price, and percentage of total non-housing expenses to median income. People who live in the city also ranked No. 82 nationally for average credit score.

WalletHub reported that 83 percent of Americans who follow a budget say rising costs are their biggest challenge.

Seattle, Washington took the top spot for best budgeters in the U.S., while Boston came in second. The study found Boston has the second-best budgeters because residents pay more than their credit card minimum each month, and a large percentage of adults in the city set aside money for emergency or rainy-day funds.

Meanwhile, a few other New England cities ranked among the top 25. Those were South Burlington, VT (No. 5), Burlington, VT (No. 15), Nashua, NH (No. 18), and Manchester, NH (No. 24).
