Popular Burger Chain To Open First New England Location In Worcester

It will take over the former location of Honey Dew Donuts, which closed back in March.

WORCESTER, MA — The state's first Checkers location is set to open in Worcester.

Checkers, a fast-food chain best known for its hamburgers, chicken, and wings, is expected to open at 99 Gold Star Blvd. in the city. The business is set to kick off operations on Feb. 10, according to a report from the Worcester Business Journal.

Business franchisee Mouhamad Saleem and Kelly Moughal, along with a Checker's corporate representative and the business's general manager, appeared before the Worcester License Commission on Oct. 21. The business was approved for a Common Victualler license and will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Saleem told the Commission that the pair also operates a Little Caesars location and other businesses in Worcester.

Checkers, which merged to form Checkers and Rally's some years ago, is based in Tampa, Florida. The Worcester location will be the first Checkers storefront in New England.

It will take over the former location of Honey Dew Donuts, which closed on Mar. 19. A company spokesperson told MassLive that the store had leasing issues with its landlord.

A few other businesses are expected to open in Worcester this month. Bees And Thank You, the mobile food truck known for its sweet and savory grilled cheeses, will open a store inside Worcester Public Market in Kelley Square, at 160 Green St.

August Coffee, at 554 Main St., across from Federal Square and The Hanover Theatre, could also be opening this month.
