WORCESTER, MA — Worcester will mark the 2022 World Day of Remembrance for road traffic victims on Sunday with a vigil near one of the city's most treacherous intersections.

Each year on the third Sunday in November, road safety advocates around the world gather to remember people who have been killed traveling along roadways. The Worcester event at the Chandler Magnet School is being cohosted by the group WalkBike Worcester and District 5 Councilor Etel Haxhiaj.

The Worcester event will feature local people who have been impacted by traffic safety problems, and attendees will speak about the need to improve road safety.

"This local event seeks to raise awareness about traffic deaths and near-misses in the City of Worcester, increase driver awareness of pedestrian safety, and rally our community, elected leaders, community advocates and residents to continue supporting efforts to decrease pedestrian deaths and injuries, and design safe roads for all," the organizers said in a news release.

The location of Worcester's World Day of Remembrance is at the intersection of May and Chandler streets, which MassDOT is targeting for a major overhaul. The wide intersection is a speedway for drivers with few pedestrian crossings in an area that is home to Worcester State University, two elementary schools and homes.

The Worcester World Day of Remembrance will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Chandler Magnet School, 525 Chandler St.
