Wrentham Police Rescue Bob the Horse from "Icy" Situation

Bob was found this morning, cold and tired. The horse slipped on ice in the middle of the night and couldn't get up.

A 1,000 pound, 24-year-old horse fell and couldn’t get up on Thursday night after he slipped on a patch of ice.

Wrentham Police were called to help Bob the horse around 9:41 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, after someone reported seeing him laying on the ice.

Police said Bob was cold and tired when they got there, as he had fallen on the ice sometime during the night and laid there for hours. The Massachusetts Equine Clinic had already tried to get the animal to his feet, but were unable to move him, police said.

After a couple of failed attempts, the Mass Equine Clinic and Wrentham police used their creativity — plus fire hoses, chains and a front-end loader — to get Bob the horse standing.

The rescuers wrapped fire hoses and chains around Bob and then hooked him to the front-end loader to lift him to his feet. Once up, Bob was able to walk to the barn on his own.

Bob’s owner Debbie Sandstrom commented on the police department’s post about the rescue saying that Bob “is resting comfortably in his stall eating hay and getting 15 liters of warm fluids.”
