19 MI Hospitals Among Nation’s Best: U.S. News Ranking

Here are Michigan's best hospitals, including one that made the "honor roll," according to a new U.S. News ranking.

MICHIGAN — Michigan has 19 hospitals that are among the best in the country, according to new Best Hospitals rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The 34th edition of the rankings recognizes the top 484 regional hospitals, as well as the top 22 "honor roll" hospitals. Hospitals that made the ranking achieved excellence across a range of specialties, U.S. News said.

Only the University of Michigan Health - Ann Arbor made the list's honor roll. The hospital was ranked No. 20 out of 22 of the best hospitals, according to the list.

Other Michigan hospitals that made the list outside of the honor roll include:

  3. Beaumont Hospital-Troy
  4. Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital
  5. Spectrum Health-Butterworth and Blodgett Campuses
  6. Henry Ford Hospital
  7. Munson Medical Center
  8. Beaumont Hospital-Grosse Pointe
  9. Bronson Methodist Hospital
  10. Ascension Genesys Hospital
  11. Beaumont Hospital-Dearborn
  12. Ascension Providence Hospital-Southfield
  13. Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital
  14. Beaumont Hospital-Trenton

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions. Hospitals awarded a “best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, quality of nursing care and patient experience.

This year, U.S. News said it placed more emphasis on objective quality measures and less on expert opinion. Other changes include the introduction of outpatient outcomes in key specialty and surgical rankings.

The rankings are meant to help patients and their doctors make health care decisions, according to Ben Harder, managing editor at U.S. News.

The top hospitals nationwide by specialty are:

Cancer

  1. University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston
  2. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York
  3. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  4. UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
  5. Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center, Boston

Cardiology, heart and vascular surgery:

  1. Cleveland Clinic
  2. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
  3. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  4. Mount Sinai Hospital, New York
  5. NYU Langone Hospitals, New York

Neurology and neurosurgery

  1. NYU Langone Hospitals, New York
  2. UCSF Health-UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco
  3. New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell
