MI Campground Closes Lake After Multiple Drownings

Officials decided to close the lake after multiple teens drowned in the lake over the past year.

MONROE COUNTY, MI — A campground in Monroe County is permanently closing its lake after multiple drownings.

The Monroe County/ Toledo North KOA Holiday Campground, located at 15600 Tunnicliffe Road in Petersburg, closed its swimming lake Wednesday. Other amenities and activities at the campground will stay open.

"While all other campground amenities and activities will remain open, we understand this may impact our guests," the campground said in a statement on Facebook. "Therefore, we're offering full refunds to guests who want to cancel their reservation between July 5 and September 4, 2023."

Officials decided to close the lake after multiple teens drowned in the lake over the past year. Last year, a 15-year-old from Detroit drowned in the lake. The teen was missing for 20 minutes before the sheriff's dive team found him.

Another teen, an 18-year-old from Ohio, drowned in the lake last Thursday. The teen disappeared under the water for roughly 10 minutes before officials found him.

The campground is offering refunds to guests who would like to cancel their reservation between July 5 and Sept. 4. The KOA campground is roughly 56 miles southwest of Detroit.
