MICHIGAN — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president in the 2024 election, and said she's not leaving Michigan.

"I am not leaving Michigan," Whitmer told reporters Monday morning in Lansing. "I'm proud to be the governor of Michigan. I've been consistent. I know everyone is always suspicious and asking this question over and over again. I know you're doing your job — I'm not going anywhere."

Whitmer's endorsement comes less than 24 hours after President Joe Biden announced he will no longer run for re-election.

"In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a presidential candidate they can count on to focus on lowering their costs, restoring their freedoms, bringing jobs and supply chains back home from overseas and building an economy that works for working people," Whitmer said in a statement.

Whitmer was among numerous other governors from key battleground states that political analysts floated for Harris' running mate. Other potential picks include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, Arizona U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
