📰 News we're reading

1. Ann Arbor City Council narrowly approves resolution for new deer study (wemu.org) — Ann Arbor residents may see changes in how the city handles its growing deer population after City Council narrowly approved a resolution to study regional management options. Officials will deliver a report within 180 days, revisiting a contentious issue that previously sparked strong backlash over potential deer culls and weighing both lethal and non-lethal strategies.

2. Growing Ann Arbor private school locked in property dispute heads to court mediation (mlive.com) — Ann Arbor Academy's plan to expand services for students with learning differences is stalled by a property dispute now headed to court-ordered mediation. The school alleges its landlord improperly tried to terminate a lease on nearby space, while the landlord argues the building couldn't meet state school-approval standards, leaving nearly 90 local students near capacity in the current facility.

3. Spirit of Ann Arbor (annarborobserver.com) — An iconic Charles McGee relief sculpture on Liberty Street is celebrated as capturing the "spirit of Ann Arbor," with locals pinpointing its spot between familiar downtown hangouts. The piece's history, ties to local nightlife, and McGee's teaching in town are highlighted, and readers are invited to join an I Spy-style challenge to identify its exact location for a library bookshop prize.

4. Five Michigan schools reduce cafeteria waste with reusable foodware switch (annarbortimes.com) — Michigan schools are cutting cafeteria waste and saving thousands annually by switching to reusable stainless-steel trays and utensils, and Ann Arbor's Casey's Tavern is joining the effort with stainless-steel cups on its patio. Supported by sustainability grants and nonprofits, these changes are eliminating hundreds of thousands of plastic items and could inspire similar waste-reduction steps in Ann Arbor homes and businesses.
