Governor declares May 31 as Michigan Community Action Day

Pontiac, Mich., May 23, 2012 – Governor Rick Snyder has declared May 31 as Michigan Community Action Day, recognizing the state’s 29 Community Action Agencies that provide programs and services in all 83 counties to support Michigan residents in becoming more economically self-sufficient.

OLHSA, A Community Action Agency, is part of this celebrated team that provides support for the low income, elderly and those with disabilities. With offices located in Pontiac, Ferndale and Howell, OLHSA provides families in Oakland and Livingston counties with the tools they need to sustain a more independent way of life.

In the proclamation, Snyder recognized Community Action Agencies like OLHSA for providing resources such as early childhood development, senior services, affordable housing, food assistance and energy assistance programs. Snyder said, “Community Action raises awareness of the important work of promoting economic security and ensuring all citizens have the opportunity to improve their lives and living conditions.”

The recognition from Governor Snyder lifts the spirits of our dedicated employees, volunteers and donors who put endless effort into implementing this mission,” said Ronald B. Borngesser, OLHSA CEO.

Congress has also acknowledged the importance of the more than 1,000 Community Action Agencies across the country by proclaiming May as National Community Action Month. Community Action got its start in the 1960s by way of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty.
