BHS Jazz Bands and show choir Encore! ready to heat it up at Valentine’s Show, Wed, Feb 12

Sure it’s cold outside, but on Wednesday, Feb. 12, the BHS jazz bands and show choir Encore! are going to make the Berkley High School auditorium sizzle.

For the first time ever, the BHS Jazz Ensemble and Encore! will perform several numbers together at an hour-long performance that will also include the BHS Jazz Lab Band and Jazz combo.

BHS Band Director Alan Posner and Choir Director Julie Anne Smith fostered the idea early in the school year as a way to highlight these intimate groups and provide them opportunities to engage with larger audiences.

Encore! is a show choir, a term now much more familiar from the hit television show “Glee,” that combines singing and choreography. Encore!, includes 20 male and female students who typically perform with an accompanist or to a soundtrack. At this event, they will also perform with the BHS Jazz Ensemble, a 19-member group that received the highest ranking at last year’s solo and ensemble festival.

In addition, the BHS Jazz Lab Band will perform prior to the main feature. The BHS Jazz Combo, featuring brothers Ryan (sax) and Zac (trumpet) Schildcrout, Nick Rhein (drums), Caelin Amin (bass) and Hannah West (keyboard) will headline the social hour that begins at 7 p.m.

During the social hour, patrons will have the opportunity to indulge in hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, bid on silent auction items, and enjoy the company of fellow music lovers.

Tickets are $5 per person and proceeds from ticket sales and silent auction will benefit the jazz bands and choir programs at the high school. Tickets can be purchased in advance from choir/band students, or at the door.
