“The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be.” ~ Marcel Pagnol
Mental Attitude: Increase Risk of Dementia with High Carb Diet. A recent interview with Dr. David Perlmutter, author of the book Grain Brain, discussed the role of small increases in blood sugar caused by a high carbohydrate diet and the increased risk for brain shrinkage, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, poor cognition, and other issues. Dr. Perlmutter explained, "We live with this notion that a calorie is a calorie, but at least in terms of brain health, and I believe for the rest of the body as well, there are very big differences between our sources of calories in terms of the impact on our health. Carbohydrate calories, which elevate blood glucose, are dramatically more detrimental to human physiology, and specifically to human health, than are calories derived from healthful sources of fat." Alternative and Complementary Therapies, April 2014
Health Alert: Obesity is Still a Problem in US… Between 2003 and 2012, obesity rates among adults in the United States (US) leveled off with about one-third of American adults now classified as obese. In adults, obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30. Individuals who are obese have a higher risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerides, coronary artery disease, stroke, and sleep apnea, among other conditions. JAMA, February 2014
Diet: Fish Consumption Protects Against Cardiovascular Disease. Scientists at the University of Eastern Finland found that participants who increased their fatty fish consumption to three to four times a week had corresponding increases in HDL (good) cholesterol. Increased HDL levels have previously been associated with a lower risk for cardiovascular disease. PLOS ONE, February 2014
Exercise: Water is Not a “Magic Bullet” for Weight Loss. Despite what many think, researchers are calling out the old claim that excessive water consumption can promote weight loss. Dr. Beth Kitchin states that, while hydration is important, drinking water doesn’t burn enough calories to matter for weight loss. While replacing sugary drinks with healthier options, like water, is important in a successful diet, drinking water as a weight loss trick is not practical. University of Alabama at Birmingham, March 2014
Chiropractic: Seizures, Headaches & Manic Episodes Resolved. A 23-year-old male presented for chiropractic care for multiple health issues including bipolar disorder, sleep disorder, seizures, neck and back pain, and migraine headaches. These symptoms began after falling and striking his head while pole vaulting at age 17. He had sought treatment from many health care providers since the accident without resolve or control of his symptoms. After one month of chiropractic care, the patient noted improvement in manic episodes, sleep, and the absence of seizures. At four months, seizures, manic episodes, and headaches were reduced from three per week to two per month. Seven months of care resulted in complete absence of symptoms and he remained symptom free 18 months later. Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics, March 2004
Wellness/Prevention: Drinking Water with High Magnesium Protects Against Hip Fractures. A study conducted in Norway found that drinking water with high concentrations of magnesium reduces the risk of suffering a hip fracture in the men and women who drink it. Norwegian Institute of Public Health, February 2014
