
Shelley Roberts of Birmingham has been selected to receive the 2011 Community Service Award. The reception and award presentation will take place on Sept. 8 at The Community House at 5:30 p.m.
The Community House initiated the Community Service Award in 1988 to recognize those people who have made extraordinary contributions through their professional careers. Its purpose is to express gratitude to those who have gone beyond the normal duties of their jobs to enhance the lives of people in the metro Detroit area.
Shelley’s association with The Community House goes back to 1985 when she was elected to the Board of Directors. Additionally, she chaired the Community Advisory Board and the Child Care Advisory Board and has been involved with many of the special events at The Community House. She served as president and CEO for 13 years.

Shelley has been on the boards of the Alzheimer’s Association, Common Ground, Planned Parenthood and she was president of the . Most recently, she has been active on the metropolitan boards of Children’s Home of Detroit, Big D and YouthVille Detroit.
Roberts was named “First Citizen” of Birmingham-Bloomfield and was recognized by the Race Relations and Diversity Task Force as a Diversity Champion. During her tenure as president, The Community House received New Detroit’s Closing the Gap Award, “A Great Place of Culture” Award, Metropolitan Detroit’s 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For, South Oakland County NAACP’s Outstanding Community Award and Corp! Magazine’s Diversity Champion Award.
