Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation Awards $5.4 Million in Pediatric Health Grants

Detroit, Michigan, June 7, 2016 -- Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation (CHMF) announced 162 grants totaling $5.4 million for pediatric health programs. Established in 2003, the Foundation is dedicated to advancing the health of children in Michigan through philanthropic support for pediatric research, community benefit and education programs.

Grants totaling $2.37 million were awarded to 23 grantees for pediatric research. Examples of the types of research funded includes: pediatric cancers, shunt research for hydrocephalus, epilepsy, conditions related to prematurity, Celiac Disease, sagittal crainosynostosis, asthma, pediatric surgery and general pediatric medical research. Recipients are from Wayne State University School of Medicine, University Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital of Michigan. A complete list may be viewed here.

Twenty three grants were awarded totaling $1.8 million for community benefit programs. Examples include grants for a lead testing program for the City of Detroit for Detroit Public Schools, injury prevention and education programs, the Hamtramck School Based Health Center, Fit Kids 360, childhood obesity and prevention program by Wayne Child Health Access Program. The Guidance Center “Kids Talk” child abuse assessment program as well as healing arts programs through Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Institute of Arts. Children’s Hospital of Michigan was the recipient of grants for programs such as the Clothes Closet, providing clothing for children in need who are patients and their families; injury prevention programs, burn program outreach and “Reach out and Read”. Eighty three grants, totaling $624,874 were also awarded to further education of pediatric professionals in order to learn about the latest advances in diagnosis, care and treatment of children. CHMF will also be funding six endowed chairs and two endowed professorships totaling $607,658.
