Doctor With Hearing Loss Opens Audiology Practice in Birmingham

"I get it," Dr. Kristin Hinderliter says of her dual perspective as an audiologist and someone who has hearing difficulties.

BIRMINGHAM, MI — Audiologist Dr. Kristin Hinderliter knows what it feels like to have hearing loss, something she has been dealing with her entire life. Born with a hereditary condition that sometimes makes it hard to hear, she knew early on that she wanted to help other people with similar problems to be able to listen better and communicate easier.

“Having hearing difficulties myself, I have a clear understanding of the challenges my patients experience,” Hinderliter, who recently opened a private audiology practice in Birmingham, said in a press release. “I get it. Having a dual perspective as both an audiology patient and doctor connects me to the people I treat in a very special way.”

For the past 13 years, Hinderliter has been co-owner of an area audiology group. Earlier this month, she decided to branch out on her own. For both personal and professional reasons, she opened Hinderliter Hearing Services, a state of the art, private practice at 751 Chestnut Street in close proximity to downtown Birmingham with a convenient private parking lot.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Hinderliter graduated from Seaholm High School and attended Michigan State University, where she received both her bachelor of arts degree in audiology and speech and her master of arts degree in audiology. She went on to earn her doctorate of audiology in 2005 from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, since renamed Salus University.

She began her career working in a non-profit organization in Detroit, working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals. She currently lives in Oakland Township with her husband and two daughters.

Hinderliter is ready to welcome new patients and expand her outreach as an advocate for hearing health in Oakland County.

“There’s no better feeling in the world when someone asks if they can hug me or when they have tears rolling down their cheeks because they can hear for the first time in a long time,” she said. “I cry right along with them because I know exactly what that feels like”
