Motown Museum announced today that it will be open on Martin Luther King Day—Monday, January 18—and will offer free admission to children 12 and under in celebration of the federal holiday. Motown Museum Chairwoman and CEO Robin Terry made the announcement.

“Martin Luther King Day is an opportunity to reaffirm those universal ideals that still resonate with us today: our shared values of unity, community, resilience and mutual respect. These are themes that inspire us–whether they are expressed from the pulpit or from the stage,” said Terry. “In its own unique way, the Motown Sound has also helped to break down racial barriers and bring people from all walks of life together. Motown played an important role in giving voice to the African American community: and, in the process, revealed that our shared cultural experience is a quintessentially American experience.”

Motown’s Black Forum Label—a spoken word label created by Berry Gordy and the Motown Corporation in the ‘60s was a venue for Black expression and education. The label served to capture the voices of African American poets and orators. The label recorded Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech.
