Need to Know: When, Where and How of Voting in Tuesday's Primary

Where to go, what to bring and who's on the ballots for the Aug. 7 primary election in Birmingham.

The absentee ballots have been mailed out and the elections inspectors have been hired, and at 7 a.m., Birmingham's polls will open for the August primary.

Though there are no Birmingham-specific issues on the ballot, there are more than a dozen races on the ballot Tuesday, including battles for seats in the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Michigan House of Representatives and a variety of county setas.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday.

What do I need to know?

  • Voters must be registered with the city at least 30 days prior to the election. They must also be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old and a resident of Birmingham for at least 30 days.
  • .
  • Voters need to bring their photo identification to the polls. If they do not have one, they will be asked to complete an affidavit.
  • Tuesday is a partially closed ballot. That means for two thirds of the ballot, voters must vote for only Republicans or only Democrats.
  • Anyone, meanwhile, can vote for the two ballot issues or judge candidates, regardles of political affiliation.

Where do I vote?

Your city-issued voter identification card indicates your precinct location for all elections, including state and national elections.
